Modern Languages SCILT event

On Wednesday 28th January, Kirkintilloch High School hosted an event for S3 pupils organised by SCILT, Scotland’s National Centre for Languages. Jim Fleeting from the Scottish Football Association gave an entertaining and motivational keynote speech to open the event. All S3 French students then participated in a carousel of presentations made by invited speakers

* Meryl James (SCILT)

* Janette Kelso (SCILT)

* Susan Young (a languages student employed by a company organising outdoor activities in Scotland)

* Roddy McDonald (Supreme Tours – school trip organiser)

* Ellen Morton (a languages student who volunteers with Project Trust)

The pupils participated in a range of activities designed to encourage them to consider the importance of learning languages as preparation for possible future careers. They experienced the frustration of trying to communicate an important message without language, learned how to write their names in the Russian alphabet and discovered the vast range of global employment opportunities which become possible to people who can speak foreign languages.

The presenters were all very impressed with the enthusiasm with which the pupils engaged in the activities. At the plenary to close the event some students took the opportunity to ask further questions and then completed an evaluation. The feedback from the S3 pupils conveyed clearly the message that this event had been a resounding success which the Modern languages Department would hope to repeat in the years to come.
