S1 Island Energy Challenge The annual Kirkintilloch High School Science Department S1 Island Energy

The annual Kirkintilloch High School Science Department S1 Island Energy Challenge final took place on Wednesday 27th May. Now in its 5th year, the grand final had a Dragon’s Den feel to it, as competing teams had to present in turn to a panel of judges. Teams were presented with a challenge that required them to suggest ways in which a fictitious island could utilise their renewable and non-renewable energy resources in order to meet the energy demands of the population. Teams were given budgets, maps of the island depicting the location of coal, gas and oil fields as well as the location of mountains, rivers, lochs and towns and cities. Teams were also asked to consider the environmental impact of their proposals.

The competition was a very tense affair with the judges commending all participants for their extensive knowledge, excellent presentation skills and very effective teamwork. However, after much deliberation, the judges picked the team from class 1A: Ben McIlveney, Hannah Price and Jordan Shields as the champions. Well done to all finalists for their excellent contributions!
