On Friday 16th November, 12 fifth year pupils from Kirkintilloch High School attended a course at Historic Scotland’s training centre in Stirling. During the excursion, the students had the opportunity to sample many skills such as: masonry, slating, lead beating and carpentry. Additionally, presentations given by construction industry leaders, Historic Scotland employees and the head of North Glasgow College opened up many other opportunities for the students to participate in. These opportunities included assistance with career progression and job opportunities in the UK and abroad.

Following this excursion, the pupils then attended an open day at North Glasgow College on the 23rd of November. Here, they had the chance to sit a test to secure a place on the National Progression Award in Construction Skills. If successful, the students could commence the course in January 2013. This course, which has an excellent reputation, will allow pupils to train at the college, experience a number of construction trade and, hopefully, will provide opportunities to gain an apprenticeship.
