Entry Requirements

Pupils should have attained Higher Chemistry at grade A.

Course Skills and Content

AH Chemistry builds on Higher, further developing Knowledge and Understanding and Problem Solving abilities. Practical skills are developed through the completion of 12 compulsary experiments. In addition, the course develops skills of independent study and thought which are essentialboth in higher education and a wide range of occupations.

Topics covered are:

  • Electronic structure and the Periodic Table;
  • Principles of Chemical Reactions;
  • Organic Chemistry.                                                                                   

In addition, an independant research project must be carried out and 2000 word report submitted.


To achieve a course award, pupils must pass the Unit Test for each unit, the research project and the final external exam.
