About the team

Channel 4's Nations & Regions team lead on Channel 4's engagement with all production companies and creative stakeholders outside of London.  Our work encompasses ideas development, new talent support, nationwide year round creative briefings, and most importantly, leading on Channel 4's commitment to increasing its Nations spend to 9% of content and hours by 2020.
We work closely with established independent production companies to help establish their roadmap for success, and aim to support the most ambitious companies to achieve those goals, while also helping newer talent understand the various routes into creative collaboration with Channel 4.

What can I expect?

You'll spend up to twelve months working in one particular business area of Channel 4, getting involved in all aspects of that department's work, finding out what makes it tick and the part it plays in Channel 4 as a whole. There'll be specific projects and assignments to get stuck into as well. We'll support you to quickly build your skills and knowledge.
In addition to gaining direct work experience, throughout this 12 month apprenticeship you will work with a nominated training provider on a Creative Industry SCQF Level 7 (equivalent to NVQ Level 3).

Who are we looking for?

We're looking for non-degree holders who are mad about the media and ready to develop their skills on the job. You don't need special qualifications- you just need a spark that sets you apart from the crowd. If you have already got a degree, you could have a think about one of our Graduate Programme roles instead. You will definitely need to be a strong communicator- someone who's happy to talk to people at all levels here at Channel 4 and externally. You'll also be keen to learn and looking to gain an all-round understanding of Commissioning at Channel 4. But on top of that, you must be prepared to work hard and muck in with whatever needs doing to keep the department running smoothly. You will also need an excellent attention to detail, good analytical skills and an ability to handle sensitive/confidential information appropriately and in line with Channel 4 protocols.

What you'll be doing

Responsibilities will include:

  • Providing on-going research support to the Nations & Regions team.
  • Assist the Nations & Regions coordinator with the Channel 4 Diversity of Supply programme across the UK and in the Glasgow office, travelling as required across the UK.  (Willingness to travel regularly, and on occasion, out of core office hours, is a requirement of this role.)
  • Capturing, maintaining and delivering key data for Channel 4's new diversity of database, collaborating with the Creative Diversity team in London as required
  • Providing administrative support as required to the Nations & Regions team on development and commissioning projects.
  • Liaising with relevant production companies across the Nations & Regions, collating up-to-date information to help promote their successes with Channel 4.
  • Providing reception support in the Glasgow office of Channel 4 for all meetings and guests, ensuring all requirements of guests are met and accommodated as appropriate

Medical Student Opportunity

Now that 2015 is approaching fast, aspiring doctors must make progress with their preparation for medical school interviews! While studying for those top grades is important, students need to make sure they have other strings to add to their bow. Here's some inspiration to help with the dreaded interview jitters.

Please forward this email on to other staff members in your school who may find it useful, as well as any pupils who are considering a career in medicine.

Interview preparation

Having experience that relates to medicine is fundamental in demonstrating an interest in this competitive field. Moreover, real life clinical experience will give students the edge when explaining their motivations for becoming a doctor, and their understanding of this complex profession. While this can be difficult to obtain, schoolteachers, NHS staff and family and friends can be invaluable in helping to arrange relevant work experience in the UK.

Work experience overseas

Gap Medics offers students the chance to experience the day-to-day life of a doctor in an overseas hospital. From shadowing surgeons in theatre to observing consultants on ward rounds, this experience will provide them with plenty to reflect on during their all-important interview. With placements in Tanzania, Thailand, Poland and Croatia, there are plenty of opportunities to observe the diversity in global healthcare. Students can really immerse themselves in the medical profession, observing major surgeries, the treatment and prevention of tropical diseases, childbirth, and much more!

Extra-curricular experience

Extra-curricular activities also deserve a mention in any interview. Students who have been on a Gap Medics placement can share an understanding of different cultures, a willingness to learn about others, and an ability to form new relationships, both socially and professionally. Based at our Gap Medics house, students will meet like-minded young people from all over the world, who they will live with in a secure environment, complete with a 24/7 staff team.

We would be grateful if you could forward this email to any prospective medics in your school, and any relevant teachers.

For more information about Gap Medics, please contact me directly on: 0191 603 1111.
