Senior Phase

National 4 and National 5 Art and Design are delivered in S4 with all pupils covering three elements: Design, Expressive and associated Critical Activity. National 4 is internally assessed with pupils completing two units (Expressive and Design) and an added value unit which forms the final solution for both.  National 5 pupils also complete two units (Expressive and Design), but this course is externally assessed by a portfolio sent to SQA and a written exam.
In the senior school, pupils currently progress to Intermediate 2 or Higher Art and Design, with pupils in S6 having the opportunity to study Advanced Higher or Higher Photography. Pupils studying Intermediate 2 explore drawing and painting through their Expressive unit of work, whilst undertaking decision making and problem solving as part of their Design unit.
However, qualifications are changing as part of Curriculum for Excellence (CfE).  CfE is the new approach to learning in schools which will help to develop young people's skills for the twenty first century.  We are currently developing new national qualifications Art and Design which young people will study as they progress into the senior phase.
